Catholic School in Baguio City opens an All Gender Restroom

Baguio City - Saint Louis University (SLU) has opened an all gender restroom to accommodate its diverse student body in the campus. 

Co-chair of the university's Triceayn Prestousa, Gender and Development Committee said that this has been a plan already for their school president. 

“SLU would like to be more inclusive in the accommodation of diverse students,” Prestousa said.

Some students were really happy about it, they feel comfortable now. 

Mac Barril, a 3rd year student, said the new restroom has made students like him more comfortable.

“Pag magsi-CR po ako, pinipili ko kung saan ako magsi-CR, iyong walang tao. Minsan nilo-lock ko po kasi hindi ko po maiwasang mahiya,” Barril said.


“Parang na-break na po iyong discrimination at iyong mga students na tulad ko na babaeng manamit, mas magiging comfortable na mag-CR."

Father Manny Flores, chancellor of the Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral in Baguio, respects the school’s decision but said there are better ways of responding to discrimination aside from providing gender-neutral comfort rooms.

“Look into our unity, not on our differences. Such move emphasizes our differences,” he said


Saint Louis University said it aims to put gender-neutral restrooms on each floor of its buildings.

Recently, it was one of the trending topics last weekend in social media regarding Bb.Pilipinas Miss International 2018 winner Karen Gallman when she was asked during the Q&A Portion of the beauty pageant.

Karen was asked about her thoughts on building a third restroom for transgenders. She answered, “I definitely agree that there should be a third restroom for transgenders because as women, we would also want our privacy, and also with men. We have a separate room for the transgenders. It just serves as equality, [privacy.] Thank you.”

Netizens quickly send their opinions on Gallman's answer in the Q&A. They criticize Karen’s answer, saying that they were disappointed that she won. They also noted that she’s promoting “isolation” and not equality.

Many said that this is an example of why we need the SOGIE Equality Bill to be passed. They also invited Karen to go on a SOGIE workshop to be educated on the matter.

Meanwhile, Singer Actor Mark Bautista said also his opinion voiced out his reaction about Gallman's answer in Binibing Pilipinas. 

On his Twitter page, Bautista corrected the question saying the third restroom is designated for Persons with Disability.

Turning serious, he said, “But seriously we just need to be accepting and open… and I think also be responsible (& respectful) in using the toilet.” He ended his tweet with special restroom is not an issue I guess…”

Mark has an autobiography entitled "Beyong the Mark", Bautista revealed that he had an "intimate" sexual encounter with a man, whom he did not name.  While some lauded him for coming out, he admitted that he lost some friends in the process.
