Change is good, especially when it benefits our daily lives. However, there were times that these changes might deem unnecessary. These are the changes we can live without, the changes that make us go “What? The old one’s better.”

If you’re familiar with this scenario, know that this is exactly how we feel about the new 5-peso coin.

NEW 5-PESO COIN

Last November, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has announced the new design of the five peso coin. On the said coin, it features Filipino Revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio for commemoration of his 154th Birthday Celebration.

Weighing 7.5 grams, the obverse of the coin bears the inscription “Republika ng Pilipinas” and the name and profile of Andres Bonifacio. The reverse features a Philippine plant called “Tayabak” and the BSP logo. It boasts of “corrosion resistance” abilities to prevent forgery.

THE OLD AND NEW 5-PESO COMPARISON

Compared to the old 5peso coin, the new coin looks simpler. But aside it became more simpler. It also gained some negative reactions from Netizens, Many netizens expressed their disappointment because of the extreme similarity with the 1 peso coin, due to its color and size.

Very similar right? This new design had a numerous of complaints and viral online.

Some netizen expressed their concerns to other people who might really get affected about these changes.

On facebook, a facebook named "Junard Juanillo Jumalon" expressed his explanation about there were a time when he had lots of 5 pesos but without realizing that he was actually paying his 5 coins as 1 peso.

I have lots of new 5 peso coins and without realizing binabayad ko sila as piso.

Dear Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, what the hell were you thinking when you released the new 1 and 5 Peso Coins? They’re almost identical in size and it’s hard to differentiate the two because they’re both silver and nickel-plated! Have you thought about the calloused hands and compromised eyesight of millions of workers, farmers, and senior citizens who can't simply detect those ridges especially when those coins are inside a cup holder, purse, and whatnot?

Have you even considered the regular commuters, drivers, vendors etc. who are too busy to check the differences of the two beloved coins? Do you really expect a passenger in a poorly lighted jeepney to look for these differences and seven times at that if he pays his minimum fare in peso coins? Also, you know that coins age and invariably the markings get degraded over time. So again, what the hell were you thinking? You should have at least put a damn hole in the middle or something! Ang sipag nyo namang mag-isip! What a concept!

PS: Everyone please be aware of this. Sayang ang 4 pesos kung maalaan nmo siya ug 1 piso. Di lalim mangitag kwarta.

Yes, change is good and inevitable, but it doesn’t need to be difficult.

The said post, garnered thousand of shares, likes and comments from netizen who also has the same experience with the new 5 pesos.

Another netizen from Twitter also tweeted how a old vendor ask her to post their concerns because the vendors where having a hard time if the ones their giving were 1 peso or 5 pesos.

@darlingcentina she tweeted.

So I bought a drink and the old manininda saw me use my phone, She told me this:

"Anak, pakipost naman na nahihirapan kaming matatanda sa bagong limang piso. Ilang beses na akong nawalan kasi hindi ko makita kung piso ba o lima."

Hey. Can we do something about this?

According to the central bank, the 5-peso coin is heavier, thicker, and slightly larger compared to our beloved piso. The 1-peso coin weighs 6 grams and is one millimeter smaller than the new 5-peso coin. It also has ridges unlike the 5-peso coin that has smooth sides. The color, however, is hard to differentiate since both are silver and nickel-plated.

So now, what we can do now is to be more cautious to the coins we pay or received also.

Four pesos is still a big sum for Filipinos. We all worked hard for our own money and we do hope that BSP must take an action on this matter.

Yes, change is good but it doesn't need to be difficult for the benefactors.

What do you think of the new 5-peso coin? Do you find it inconvenient as well? Let us know in the comment box below.
