After 30 years in Netherlands, Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison finally finds it safe to come home after President Rodrigo Duterte assured that he would not be gunned down or killed when he comes back.

Sison trust his former student’s words, saying that it’s better to have an assurance of safety from the President himself as it will allay efforts at peace negotiations between the CPP and the country.

The CPP founder furthered that Duterte’s word on his safety promises a future dialogue and agreement on how they can better serve the interest of the “toiling masses of workers and peasants through the peace negotiations and cooperation under the principles of national sovereignty, democracy and social justice.

Duterte made this pronouncement on Sison’s safety during the Presidential Security Group (PSG) Change of Command Ceremony at the PSG Grandstand where he said, “I may call on, maybe, members of his command to protect him. I have provided a small window of 60 days. And if you come home, do not worry about being killed. I will not do that.”

The President empathizes with the CPP founder as both men have lost troops during armed encounters.

Peace talks throughout the duration of Duterte’s reign had not reaped successfully especially after a New People’s Army (NPA) ambush attack last November 9, 2017 that killed a four-month-old baby.

Additionally, Duterte signed Proclamation 374 which labelled the CPP and NPA as terrorist organizations.

Despite these developments, the President promised Sison that the latter is free to come and go whether future peace negotiations become successful or not.

But this time, sabi ko nga, sabihin ko sa kanya, ‘please, if it is unsuccessful, please go home.’ Ihatid ko siya sa airport. Walang Aquino style na patayan, na barilin ko sa likod (I bring him to the airport myself. No Aquino-style murder, shot from behind),” Duterte vowed.

However, this does not show that Duterte will agree to a coalition agreement with the communists anytime soon.

Come home and talk, and as long as you do not ask (for) a coalition government, which I cannot give and will never give, you can come home and talk to me and the others, and maybe in the fullness of God’s time we can achieve peace in our land,” he said.
