Manila Philippines - President Rodrigo Duterte is not a man of the people as what the public wants to see him, a cause oriented group said on Monday, March 26. The group slammed the President's policies on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers, closure of tourist spots such as Boracay Island and transport modernization or the E Jeepney transportation.

It was the group named "Tindig Pilipinas" said in a statement, denounced the tough-talking Duterte’s roughshod approach to solving problems especially because of the inflationary effects of the first package of the government’s tax reform law, which took effect on the first day of 2018.

The tax reform law has been a wide changing law especially having experience now on the impact on people's livelihood could be seen among residents of Boracay, which Duterte called a “cesspool” for the environmental degradation spawned by rapid development and non-observance of environmental laws.

Tindig Pilipinas also stated that the reason on Duterte's order to shut down the famous tourist spot Boracay was to displace legitimate business owners who had complied with national and local regulations with a Chinese gambling conglomerate.

However, just days after the proposal was floated, it emerged that two resorts would be established in Boracay, one by Resorts World and another by Macau’s Galaxy.

A Macau-based casino operator may have secured a provisional license to operate a $500-million casino in Boracay, but it will still have to meet Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) requirements before it can build structures on the island.

Rehabilitation efforts in Boracay began in February after President Rodrigo Duterte called the world-famous island destination a “cesspool.”

Tindig Pilipinas said that “This will not solve Boracay’s environmental issues."

“It is merely wanting to displace legitimate business owners who have complied with all the regulations set by the government both national and local, with a Chinese gambling conglomerate,” the group added.

Tindig Pilipinas also criticized Duterte’s order to halt the deployment of Filipinos to Kuwait, following a rising number of reports of abuse by employers.

The President said he will no longer allow the practice of Kuwaiti employers confiscating the passports of Filipino domestic helpers. He said workers should be allowed to enjoy holidays.

“I have said that we are not slaves. Maybe our only fault is that we are poor,” said Duterte.

The group also said his transport modernization policy, which aims to remove from Philippine roads old jeepneys, the primary mode of transportation among Filipinos.
